BONNIE ZORC

Congratulations to our 2020 "Woman of Distinction" award winner, Bonnie Zorc!  Bonnie retired from TimkenSteel in 2017, and has been the Co-leader of Canton Ohio Days for Girls Chapter for more than three years, and a member for seven. She serves as a mentor at Hannah House and for the Beacon Academy’s sixth grade girls class.  A mother of three daughters, she has been married to her husband Tom for more than 34 years.  Bonnie was a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, with a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science.

Days for Girls International was founded eleven years ago to create sustainable feminine hygiene kits to donate to over 1.5 million girls all over the world so they can stay in school.  The local chapter has been in existence for eight years.  Bonnie enjoyed getting together with many talented, generous spirited women with the common goal of helping girls achieve their education, avoid childhood marriage, and manage their periods with dignity.

Members of the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pads” chapter need not know how to sew or quilt to make a difference; they apply all talents and time to the Days for Girls mission.  They have created over 8,000 kits to date.  Bonnie says, “Our efforts give meaning to our lives and we share the beauty of service with whoever attends and shares time.  Having many generations participate in events is very endearing to our members.  We have had much encouragement for our mission from Soroptimist. specifically knowing these kits are more than just a yard of fabric:  they very much support many of the issues that affect the lives of women and girls that Soroptimist also supports.”

JESSICA TSOUFIOU & MAGGIE O'BRIAN

Congratulations to our 2020 "Ruby Award for Women Helping Women" winners! Frazer Elementary teachers Jessy Tsoufiou and Maggie O’Brian co-founded the Fierce Females at in Fall 2018. The confidence and kindness-building program for fourth grade girls embraces the motto, “Learn, Lead, and Love.” Students participate in service projects and lessons to build confidence in their abilities and make them less troubled by peer pressure and social environments. Professional women from across the country present powerful messages to the group. Emphasis is placed on spreading kindness and the importance of giving back. Daily, the girls empower each other by supporting one another as they work to achieve their goals.

Fierce Females Co-Founder and fourth-grade Math teacher, Jessica Tsoufiou, has been contributing to the healthy development of fourth graders at Frazer Elementary in Plain Local School District for seventeen years. Jessy has proudly served her school and the community as a team leader, peer consultant, lead teacher, tutor, mentor, and national Milken Educator Award winner.

Maggie O’Brian is a fourth grade English Language Arts teacher at Frazer Elementary, a position she has held for the past eight years. She has spent the last thirteen years committed to developing literacy skills and personal growth among her students. O’Brian has been recognized as a Repository Teacher of the Month, a member of various state and district initiatives, and a building team leader.

The Soroptimist Ruby Award honors women who, through their professional or personal efforts, are making extraordinary differences in the lives of women and girls. Honorees are women who have worked to improve the lives of other women or girls. Their work has had a significant impact, and also inspires and encourages other women.
